1. Auction Houses
Christies East-New York, Bonhams-London, Sotheby's-London and Christie's-London have periodic auctions. If you send in a snapshot and some details about the picture they will let you know if they are interested and work with you to set a value.
2. Galleries
Click above for a reasonably complete listing of Galleries that sell marine art. Call a gallery and send them a picture and details. If interested, they will buy the picture outright or accept it on consignment.
Try an internet search. You might find a gallery that handles the artist.(note: keep the full name in quotes e.g., "montague dawson" )

How much is my picture worth?
Value depends on the specific picture: size, condition, subject, medium, artistic merit and artist.
1. Auction Houses will give you an estimate if you list your picture for auction. Most also provide an appraisal service(for a fee)
2.Marine art Galleries will often give you a rough estimate on the phone. An accurate estimate takes some work and a look at the picture. Some will ask for a fee to do the work.
3. An Appraiser
Check your yellow pages.
4. Internet auction results.
look in the Auction Results page of the Research section
5. Your local library or bookseller.
Ask for one of the many books that report auction results. One of the most popular is the Art Sales Index.

2. Try an internet search. If you are looking for John Doe: Enter

in the Find this field(including the quotation marks). You can add more qualifying information if you desire. Precede the information with a plus sign like: +ship

4.Contact a museum. A local museum may have some knowledge.
Can I have permission to copy or license this picture?
The Marine Art Information Center cannot grant any kind of licensing arrangement for the use of the images featured on this site. All artworks are protected by international copyright laws (see our copyright notice ). In order to reproduce a specific image, you must first contact the owners of the artwork - in most cases this will be the museum or Gallery which owns the work of art.
