| The Maritime Museum of BC's mandate is to preserve and promote the maritime heritage and culture of British Columbia to the people of BC and beyond. Our mandate however, is not static. The MMBC constantly strives to evolve. Ours is an ongoing exploration of the past that will help ensure a better understanding of the future. We encourage the thrill of discovery and the joy of acquiring knowledge.
At our heart is a nationally recognized collection consisting of 37,000 artifacts, 40,000 photographs, 30,000 sheets of ship plans, 5,000 charts, 1,000 prints and paintings, a 6,000 volume library and a 10,000 document archive of manuscripts, oral histories and personal papers.
The MMBC serves our many communities through permanent, special and temporary exhibitions, programs (public and curriculum based offered both in house and externally), access to volunteer researches and staff, special events and facility rentals. Additionally, our publications – Resolution and Waterlines – are complimentary to members and are for sale in our shop. | The prize collection of this 'general history community' museum is its collection of ship portraits. This collection represents the Yarmouth fleet from approximately 1850 to 1920 and features works by ship portrait painters from around the world. The collection also includes navigating instruments, charts, logbooks, photographs, etc. The museum is owned and operated by the Yarmouth County Historical Society
